Bath Ladies 13 - 7 North Petherton Ladies

Bath Recreation Ground, Saturday, March 10, 2018

Bath Ladies ‘Babas’retained the Webb Ellis Somerset County Women's Cup with a 13-7 victory over North Petherton Ladiesin a very evenly contested match, played in heavy conditions, at the Bath Recreation Ground as part of Bath Rugby Foundation's celebration of International Women's Day. International referee Clare Daniels took charge of the game and also gave a talk to those interested in becoming a referee. The game was part of the celebration of International Women's Day presented by the Bath Rugby Foundation to promote Women and girls into the sport and showcase the current talent and opportunities in the area.

The teams were evenly matched with Bath fielding a mixture if the first and second team and they came close on a number of occasions only to be halted by some strong Pethy defence and counter attacking. Bath took the lead through a catch and drive move with No.8 Laura Kelsey getting the touchdown. Pethy had to play five minutes either side of the half time break with flanker Janet Dyer in the sin-bin after a high tackle.

But Bath were unable to take advantage of the extra player though when Pethy were back to full strength, they added a second try as hooker Laura Mahoney peeled of the side of a driving maul after a penalty was kicked to touch. Centre Sarah Holloway added a 15-metre penalty from in front of the posts to stretch the lead but Pethy kept battling and, with ten minutes to play, replacement Sarah Cavill powered over and Rosie Wheeler added the extras.

On the final whistle there was added cause for the celebrations when Bath Ladies’ loyal supporter Ben Head came on to the muddy Rec pitch to pitch to propose to Bath Ladies second team captain Sarah Dickinson.

After the match Nick Robins, the Webb Ellis Somerset County Women’s Cup Administrator, presented the match officials and players with their medals plus the finalists Plate to North Petherton and the Webb Ellis Somerset County Women's Cup to Bath Ladies.
