The Webb Ellis Somerset County Women’s Cup 2018/2019

Final

Bath Ladies 48 - 5 North Petherton Ladies

Hornets RFC

Bath Ladies Barbarians retained the Webb Ellis Somerset County Rugby Football Union Women’s Cup for a third successive season in a repeat of the 2018 final with a 48-5 victory North Petherton Ladies.

Pethy suffered an early set back when fly-half Stacey Saunders was sent to the sinbin by referee Laurence Beere for a trip tackle. Bath took advantage of the extra player by scoring two converted tries. Laura Mahoney and Nicole Jones claimed the touchdowns, with Sarah Holloway adding the extras, but the 22-metre penalty attempt from Pethy centre Rosie Wheeler hit the upright and bounced back into play.

Despite Pethy being restored to full strength Bath stretched their lead before the break with a second try from Jones and a burst down the wing before touching down behind the posts. Holloway converted both, the second with a quickly taken drop goal, but three minutes before the break Megan Kitchen scored Pethy’s only try of the game in the corner but her side were left trailing 33-5 at half time.

The scoreboard remain untroubled for the opening 15 minutes of the second half before Bath increased their lead with a try from Ellen Witt and two more from ‘Player of the Match’ Nina Edwards.

Somerset County Rugby Football Union President Mark Hawkes presented the medals to the match officials – referee Laurence Beere, assistant referees Brian Perry and Paul Box plus fourth official Chris Leadbetter. Both sets of players being presented with their medals, North Petherton skipper Gemma Thorne was presented with the runners-up Plate before Bath co-captains Sarah Holloway and Gemma Thorburn were presented with the Cup.

The Somerset County Rugby Football Union’s Competitions & League Committee would like to thank Hornets RFC for hosting the match and providing the post match hospitality plus the Somerset Referees Society for the match officials.
